Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the hinterher cargo bike trailers

1. What load can the hinterher bicycle trailer carry?

Due to its extremely sturdy construction and the high-quality components, approx. 80 kg can be transported with the trailer when using it as a hand cart. When using it as a bicycle trailer, you must take the brake force and the construction of the bicycle into consideration. Therefore, a general permissible trailer weight of max. 45 kg is recommended. The risk of tipping over at high speeds and around corners must also be taken into consideration. The lowest possible centre of gravity is of particular importance here.

2. How is the hinterher bicycle trailer mounted on the bicycle?

Always with a low tow bar of Weber technology. For this, a Weber-coupling EL (included in the standard package) is fastened to the rear wheel axle of the bicycle. The trailer tow bar is then attached to the coupling with a click.

The vertically-positioned tow bar can also be seen on the images for use as a hand cart. In this position, the trailer can and may only be used manually.

For a number of different reasons, trailers are rarely fixed to the seat-post with a high tow bar these days. A bicycle with low tow bar is significantly more sturdy and easier to ride, and when unloaded you can hardly feel the trailer at all.

If you use quick-release hub axles in your bicycle, you may require an extended quick release axle. Please check if sufficient thread is available for attaching to the coupling or if the fastening-screw is only barely fixed on the axle.

Due to the many different sizes of bikes on the market today, a special construction to install the coupling may be required. Your bicycle dealer will help you find a suitable Weber-coupling and fit it for you. You can also contact us or WEBER-Technik directly.

If you do so, please send us photos that show the left, rear end of your bike frame, where the coupling has to be attached.


3. Does the trailer rattle when towed behind the bicycle?

Hardly at all, because we have spent a lot of effort developing the components of most of the trailers to prevent this rattling, especially when unloaded. For this reason, we have designed a unique and patented tow bar attachment for the bicycle trailer hinterher, which allows a fully backlash-free and rattle-free attachment of the tow bar. Moreover, all the other components have been optimized to help reduce noise levels while riding.

An exception is the aluminium collapsible shovel. If you happen to use this accessory, you should make sure that the shovel is clamped with a piece of foam or similar material, while riding. The axle retainers also require minimum amount of play, so that they can be easily and safely inserted. But even with a light load, the low noise is hardly noticeable any more.



4. Can the trailer rust?

No, the bicycle trailer will not rust because we use only high-quality components. The chassis is made of milled 4mm-aluminium sheet and deburred neatly from all sides and cannot rust. All screws are made of stainless steel Inox, Inbus 4mm M6 with countersunk head. All adapters are made of high-quality, fibreglass-reinforced, injection-moulded plastic by tools specially developed for this.



5. Is this just another chic, overpriced lifestyle product

No. Firstly, the hinterher bicycle trailer has been developed as a tool for professional use. The first-class workmanship and the clear and simple design are the result of a long working process. Our aim was to create extremely flexible and robust working equipment that can be adapted to all possible tasks and that masters exceptional transport tasks with ease. The fact that it also looks good is an added bonus and is ultimately the result of the complex design process.

In terms of quality, the hinterher is definitely worth the price! A fact proven by the positive feedback we receive from satisfied customers time and time again. It is better to buy quality once than to feel annoyed five times...



6. Can I order the trailer with a wooden floor, which can be seen in some of the photos?

In principle yes, however these photos have been taken from a series that is not manufactured any more. We feel we have now found a much better design of the aluminium chassis, which can be fitted more durably, easily and simply. The attractive wooden ledges were relatively heavy, time-consuming (and thus expensive) and needed of a lot of upkeep. But of course you could easily stick a similar wooden ledge flooring with double-sided adhesive tape in the aluminium container.


We always recommend ordering the rubber mat along with the hinterher trailer. This grooved rubber mat fulfils several functions simultaneously: It protects the paint of the floor of the container, it helps prevent the load from slipping around and it reduces vibration and noise.


7. Is the bicycle trailer lockable?

We generally recommend locking the complete bicycle trailer with a 2m cable lock, because then all of the components are locked together - and yes, the hinterher bicycle trailer is so attractive that many would certainly love to take it home. The basic idea of the hinterher however is its quick and simple disassembly. If we had all the components permanently locked together, we would sabotage this basic idea. The lockable tow bar is a very good anti-theft device, i.e. if the trailer is left standing for a short time while shopping, this lock can prevent the trailer being taken. However it still doesn’t substitute a good bicycle lock.

8. Why does the bicycle trailer cost so "much"?

Well, actually, the hinterher trailer is not expensive, but quite reasonably priced. Since we have become used to mass-produced products that have been manufactured cheaply under questionable working conditions in Asia, many people have lost their sense for high quality work. If you take a close look at these cheap products, they are often not worth the money, break quickly and generally can’t be repaired, or there are no spare parts available...


Our bicycle trailer, however, is almost exclusively produced in Germany, using high-quality material, from companies that we can trust and with whom we like to work. All the parts can be easily replaced if they should break and are available individually. We work in the region, we don’t want to move the production to the Far East because of profit maximization, we wish to have short production and delivery routes — in short, we want a product for which you and we never need to be ashamed of.. Of course, it is evident that you cannot have a product of this quality at the same price as the cheaply manufactured imported goods from the Far East. But it is certainly not overpriced!



9. Is the trailer actually manufactured in Munich?

Yes, we have developed this bicycle trailer from day-to-day life in the city centre and assemble it in our workshop in Munich. The components are almost exclusively manufactured by regional companies around Munich. An exception to this are the wheels, since practically all rims and hubs available in Europe are imported. The title "made in Munich" is therefore not a hollow slogan - we value short transport routes and the strengthening of regional networks.


10. It is difficult to drive with a trailer bike?

No, rent a bicycle trailer from a dealer in your area and try it! A hinterher trailer is quite easy to tow, and you will hardly feel it.

You will be amazed at how easy it works, even when the trailer is loaded. Since the trailer has two wheels and an auxiliary support, it is safe against tipping, and when it stops or moves.

Especially compared with load-carrying bikes, even untrained cyclists cope better with a trailer. It usually only takes a few trips before they become used to our lightweight and quiet trailers moving behind them...




11. Do I need tools to build the trailer?

No, the hinterher bicycle trailer can be set up with a few clicks and without tools and is attached to the bicycle coupling with a click-closure. Only for the assembly of the coupling to the rear axle of your bicycle might you need a 15mm fork wrench (with bolted axle). It is also generally not problem if you have a quick release hub axle,


If you have any questions on fastening the clutch to the rear fork-end, it would be the best if you contact your local dealer. Alternatively contact us or Weber-Technik, the manufacturer of the couplings (they have several special solutions for almost all kinds of bicycles).


All the components of the hinterher are fixed with a single screw type: The Inox-Inbus -Flat Head Screw M6. For repairs or replacement of individual parts, you just need a 4mm Allen key. The nuts are fixed in an inner hexagonal head in the injection-moulded parts without tools and don't need to be fastened with a 10mm-open-end wrench.
